By entering Japan, It is necessary, that you have a passport, which is legal for at least six months. Normally, this criterion is sufficient for holidays or a stay up to 90 days.
Furthermore, it depends on your function in Japan (holiday, work, industrial placement, studies, ...), if you need a visa. In addition, the duration of your stay will decide, if you have to register at Japanese authorities.
