In photo shops of Promarkt, MediaMarkt, Saturn etc. you can find bags called "filmsafe" (they cost about 15 EUR in Germany, status: July 2003). You can use these bags as safety for your film, so that they won't be damaged when passing the security check at the airport. Bad effects can occur in connection with X-rays of the securtiy devices at airports.

I tried to get more informations on the necessitiy of these filmsafes at Fraport AG, the result is shown afterwards.

Axel:
"Subject: Problems with films in X-ray devices?
Hello!
I saw some filmsafes to protect films against X-rays used during security checks in several photo shops. So, I have the following question:
Is it a problem to be taken seriously or are these X-ray devices not dangerous for photo equipment?

Fraport AG:
"Good morning Mr. Küßner,
the X-ray devices of Fraport AG are harmless for footage. There may be problems with other security companies, who use other devices. Here could be an increased risk for footage in your baggage.
This is my advice for you: Take your footage in your hand luggage, because theses checks are made by Fraport AG. Furthermore you have the possibility to give notice of your footage when passing the hand luggage check and to insist on a manuell check. This will take more time for the passenger, but it is the most securely way to transport your footage, which could be damaged.
This process is only available for Frankfurt airport. We don't have any informations on this topic concerning other airports."
