On Edos traces
Edo is the name for Tokyo during the period before 1868. Right in this
year, the city Edo was renamed to "To-kyo", which has the meaning of
"eastern capital". Hence, there is a similarity to "Kyo-to" that has
been the capital of Japan for a long time, too. The best way to learn
about the history of Edo an Tokyo is to go to the Edo-Tokyo museum.

Inside the museum you can read many interesting facts and if you want, you
can be guided by volunteers in your mother language (I think that German
speaking voluntary guides are only available on weekends), it is for free.
Actually, I prefered to read the explanations in English and to feel the
effect of the works of art, which worked very well. The big models, which
show scenes of the Edo period in great detail, are very impressive.

After visiting the museum I went to the "Yasuda Japanese Garden", which is
only open on weekends and holidays. It is a very nice garden with a small
lake and many possibilities to sit down and relax.

However, the most fascinating thing are still the traditional shoes of
Japanese people. Today, they often wear these shoes, which are called "zori",
when going to festivals. Actually, I am not sure, if they are really
comfortable...
