Meiji-Schrein
Generally, you suppose temples and shrines to be very old buildings. The
Meiji-shrine, however, was build in 1920 and reconstructed after his
destruction in the World War II. Around a big tree, there are many wooden
sign where visitors and religous people have written down their wishes.
In the interior of the shrine, you can buy a lot of souvenirs and their are
some hints, how to pay respects at a shrine:
- In appropriate dress, you proceed along the path through the Torii Gate.
- At Temizusha (the font for absolutions), you rinse your hands and
mouth using water from the stone basin. You should not touch the
dipper with your lips directly.
- Then you proceed to the Main Shrine building. You may throw some coins
into the Offering Box if you wish.
- In front of the Main Shrine, you bow twice.
- Then you clap your hands twice.
- Finally, you bow once again.
What a pity, if you find these hints, when you are leaving... but I have the
knowledge for the next time.
