Meiji-Schrein

Generally, you suppose temples and shrines to be very old buildings. The Meiji-shrine, however, was build in 1920 and reconstructed after his destruction in the World War II. Around a big tree, there are many wooden sign where visitors and religous people have written down their wishes.

In the interior of the shrine, you can buy a lot of souvenirs and their are some hints, how to pay respects at a shrine:

  1. In appropriate dress, you proceed along the path through the Torii Gate.
  2. At Temizusha (the font for absolutions), you rinse your hands and mouth using water from the stone basin. You should not touch the dipper with your lips directly.
  3. Then you proceed to the Main Shrine building. You may throw some coins into the Offering Box if you wish.
  4. In front of the Main Shrine, you bow twice.
  5. Then you clap your hands twice.
  6. Finally, you bow once again.

What a pity, if you find these hints, when you are leaving... but I have the knowledge for the next time.
